OpenSceneryX v3

Although we don’t host the OpenSceneryX package, we’re pleased to offer you in consult with OpenSceneryX owner Austin, some background of his awesome package OpenSceneryX version 3.x and the direct link to his website.

The OpenSceneryX project is a free to use library of scenery objects for X-Plane®. It is a collaborative effort by members of the X-Plane.org community, providing a good range of high quality scenery components for authors to use in their scenery packages.

The library contains many pre-built 3d models including buildings, aircraft and vehicles as well as a large collection of ground markings, ground furniture and trees from both Europe and America.

An index of all the objects in the current version is available here. Note that you cannot download single objects, you must download the library as a whole.

Scenery Packages that use OpenSceneryX. So if you’ve downloaded the library and would like to see it in use, you’ll need to find a scenery package that uses it! Take a look at the list of packages that are enhanced by OpenSceneryX.

Some background information for those who are new to X-Plane and libraries.
The library is organised into five top-level categories, corresponding to the five types of resources currently contained in the library – objects, facades, forests, polygons and lines. There is nothing stopping us from extending this to include X-Plane®’s other resource types (beaches, roads etc.) but no-one has contributed any yet so currently there is no need. Within each resource type, the library is organised into categories and sub-categories down to several levels, to produce a hierarchical organisation scheme. For example, objects are primarily categorised into ‘aircraft’, ‘buildings’, vehicles’ etc. and ‘buildings’ are further subdivided into ‘commercial’, ‘industrial’, ‘airport’ etc. Getting this organisation right has been one of the challenges of managing the library, and a few mistakes have been made here and there along the way!
